How Long Do Handmade Candles Actually Last?

One of the most common questions customers ask before buying a candle is: How long will it actually last?

The honest answer is that a handmade candle can last a long time when it is made well and cared for properly. But the burn time depends on a few things, including the candle size, wax type, wick, fragrance load, and how the customer burns it.

At Oil & Wick Candle Co., our candles are hand-poured with care, scent strength, and peaceful moments in mind. That means we want you to enjoy your candle safely, beautifully, and for as long as possible.

Candle Size Matters

The larger the candle, the longer it will usually last.

A smaller candle may be perfect for a bathroom, desk, or quiet evening routine. A larger candle may be better for a bedroom, living room, or longer self-care moments.

As a general guide:

  • An 8 oz candle may last around 35–45 hours

  • A 12 oz candle may last around 55–65 hours

  • A 16 oz candle may last around 75–90 hours

These times can vary depending on how the candle is burned, the wick, and the environment. For example, a candle burned near a fan, open window, or air vent may burn faster or unevenly.

Handmade Candles Need Proper Candle Care

A handmade candle can last longer when you take care of it the right way. Candle care is not just about safety. It also helps you get the best scent, the cleanest burn, and the most use from your candle.

One of the biggest tips is to let the candle melt all the way across the top during the first burn. This helps prevent tunneling, which happens when the wax only melts down the center and leaves extra wax around the sides.

If a candle tunnels, you may lose burn time because not all of the wax is being used.

Trim the Wick Before Each Burn

Before lighting your candle, trim the wick to about 1/4 inch.

This helps the candle burn more evenly and keeps the flame from getting too large. A wick that is too long can cause the candle to burn too hot, create more smoke, and use up the wax faster.

At Oil & Wick, we use wood wicks in many of our candles because they add a cozy, soft, comforting feel. Wood wicks still need care. Keeping the wick trimmed helps the candle perform better and last longer.

Burn Time Should Be Limited

Even if you love the scent, it is best not to burn your candle all day.

A good burn time is usually around 2 to 4 hours at a time. This gives the wax enough time to melt evenly across the top without overheating the candle.

Burning a candle too long can make it burn faster than it should. It can also affect the wick and the overall quality of the candle.

A candle is meant to create a moment, not be rushed.

Scent Strength Can Affect the Experience

Some customers think a candle has to be burning for a long time to enjoy the scent, but a well-made candle should begin filling the space without needing to burn all day.

One of my favorite examples is our Golden Hour scent. A customer once shared that they had not even lit the candle yet, and the scent had already filled the classroom.

That is the kind of candle experience we love at Oil & Wick: soft, noticeable, and comforting without being overwhelming.

How to Make Your Handmade Candle Last Longer

To get the most out of your candle, follow these simple tips:

  • Trim the wick before each burn

  • Let the wax melt evenly across the top

  • Burn for about 2 to 4 hours at a time

  • Keep the candle away from fans, vents, and drafts

  • Stop burning when only about 1/2 inch of wax remains

  • Keep the lid on when the candle is not in use to protect the scent

These small steps can help your candle burn cleaner, last longer, and smell better each time you use it.

Handmade Candles Are Made to Be Enjoyed Slowly

Handmade candles are not just about how many hours they burn. They are about the experience they create.

A candle can help you unwind after work, enjoy a quiet bath, reset your home, pray, journal, clean, rest, or simply breathe for a moment.

At Oil & Wick, each candle is hand-poured with love, quality, and your peace in mind. We want every candle to feel like a small moment of calm in your day.

So, how long do handmade candles actually last?

With the right size and proper care, they can last for many peaceful hours. But more than that, they can help create moments you actually look forward to.

Because a good candle should not just burn.

It should bless the space it is in.
